I chose to use Storify.com. I have heard of it before but had no idea until now what it was. I am still a little unclear on how it all works but I am learning slowly. I decided to follow a few newspapers from around the country like the New York Times because i feel they deliver good news. I also followed a few sports blog pages so I can keep up with sports as well! These are the two things I care about most. I also followed a page on health and fitness because I am heavily into exorcise and health. As time goes on, hopefully I will become more familiar with this site because it is foreign to me and rather hard to navigate for me right now.
Usually I use many different sites to learn new things. The main ones I like to use though are any scholarly ones that are peer reviewed or have been published in journals. That way, I know that the information is reputable and mostly true. I try to stay away from wikipedia because there is no regulating information through that site. I also try to stay away from personal blogs or magazines because often times, they are biased. I also like to look at the author and see if they are a good source to read from. I wouldn't want to read about baseball strategy from a football coach. I don't follow any specific authors online but I do follow my towns local newspaper online through my facebook. It is a good way for me to keep up with local and foreign current events. The web is bittersweet for me (as it is with all students I assume) because it is easy to get information for school related work. It also helps me when coaching because I often look up videos of new coaching strategies, ideas, conditioning tips, and other aspects of wrestling. It is bad sometimes for me because I can get distracted when I am doing homework and log onto facebook or yahoo news and not focus on working. I think technology and learning has come a long way in the last couple decades. Rather than having to go to libraries and read everything when researching, one can just look it up online in minutes. It can even be done on a smartphone from almost anywhere on the go. There are also so many resources for every topic (for the most part) out there in case one is not useable for some reason. Journal articles are plentiful which makes research not as hard as it probably was years ago.
Some situations where I feel most comfortable are when I have to communicate with my student-athletes. I have no problem letting them know what I expect from them and I feel they are always on the same page when I am coaching. I am also in my sweet spot when I need to show a certain move or example of a skill that I am teaching. I do not second guess my skill set when I am instructing at all. I believe the athletes need to buy-in to my coaching (a term my college football coach always used) and confidence in their coach is key to that. An area that is not within my strengths is communicating well with parents on a regular basis. There is a parent meeting at the beginning of the year but after that there is nothing scheduled. On average it is around once every other week or more during off season before I talk to each parent. I need to work on that because since I coach minors, their parents are very important in the athletes' lives. I also am not good at communicating all the time with other coaches. Most of the time we are on the same page but there are times when there is misunderstanding. To be a successful program and to be good coaches we need to think alike and always know what each other is thinking. I can definitely work on constant communication outside of the practice room with parents and other coaches.
Microblogging is new to me. I have never had a twitter account until now but I feel that it can be a great tool for education/athletics. Social media is huge in delivering news to people and twitter is no exception. I always see on TV people tweeting each other (athletes to other athletes) or news being delivered through tweets. I use facebook to learn about current events and news and sports because usually they pop up on the news feed. They inform me of what is going on/ what happened in sports. I also read articles on the latest trends and science so I can keep up with current events. I am hoping I can learn how to use twitter like I know how facebook works. There will be a learning curve to understand it but after a lot of practice, Im sure i will get it!
I liked how Drew Jensen used a colored theme to represent himself. He used some pictures to give the viewer something to look at and break up the wording. I feel his website is very well organized and straight to the point. I Like that it is easy to navigate through and the topics are easily understood through the titles. I think he could improve his page by using a bigger font on some of the lengthier sections. It is a smaller font and is hard to see. He represented himself using both a personal and professional approach. The page is professional looking and organized but he also included information about his personal life and has some pictures. I would copy his organization of the site and the easiness of navigating through it. He also used a good color theme to make everything flow. I plan to also include pictures like he did so the viewer is not looking at only words in each section. I probably would not use the size font he used for some of his section writings. They are just hard to read and the color on the grey background makes it even harder to see.
This is my first time creating a website so I am completely foreign to this whole experience! My name is Friedrich Duerr and my favorite hobbies are working out, hanging with friends, riding dirt bikes, snowboarding (season is almost here :) ), hanging with my dog, and eating. I have been coaching high school wrestling for the last 6 years and plan to continue in addition to teaching in the future. I graduated high school in 2008 where I went to Santa Rosa Junior College to play football. I got my Associates Degree in 2011 and transferred to San Francisco State University in 2012. I got my Bachelors degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Physical Education in 2013. After completing this graduate program, I aspire to teach/coach at my alma mater Santa Rosa Junior College. I hope I can learn how to create a professional web page and learn more about technology in kinesiology. Excited to learn!
